Higher education faculty use of a learning management system in face-to-face classes

Technology in the 21st century is integrated to many aspects of American society. There has been a steady increase with the use of educational technology in higher education classes. The use of a learning management system (LMS) in a face-to-face class enables a web-enhanced teaching and learning environment. The purpose of this study was twofold. First, it examined how higher education faculty apply an LMS within their face-to-face classes. Secondly, it identified characteristics of faculty that contribute to LMS usage. The top five LMS features used by the faculty included posting syllabus, email/messages, grade book, students uploading assignments and providing links to web resources. The results show that there were some differences in LMS use or reasons based on characteristics of faculty, but more often, use was pretty consistent across the examined demographics.
